MOZIK is a collaboration between pianist Gilson Schachnik and drummer Mauricio Zottarelli. The group offers a muscular new take on Brazilian jazz through their original compositions and unique arrangements of classic songs, showcasing many different styles and grooves. Their captivating album MOZIK reflects their deep engagement with Brazilian rhythms and forms, filtered through their love of the early fusion of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock.
The group includes a fascinating international cast of musicians, including Brazilian guitarist Gustavo Assis-Brasil, Russian flutist Yulia Musayelyan and Argentine bassist Fernando Huergo. The quintet navigates effortlessly the intricate grooves with much precision and power, from Afoxé beats to Maracatú grooves, baião, samba, folkloric melodies, and bossa-nova and jazz inspired harmonies.
Mozik was selected by the prestigious blog “Jazz Station” by Arnaldo deSouteiro, as the #1 best new talent of 2011, and included on their “15 best CDs of 2011”.
